Amira’s Story
Attacked by a gang…
Amira* lived with her mother and brother, her father had passed away some years previously. They were extremely poor and all the family had to work in order to survive. Amira worked as a domestic servant for a wealthy family and whilst returning home one day after work, she was attacked and raped by a gang, she was just seventeen years old. The traumatic effects of the incident coupled with the shame was so great she decided to end her life on the train tracks in her city by throwing herself in front of a passing train. The local pastor and his wife heard of her plight and invited Amira to church and offered to pray for her. They shared her story with me and asked my advice how to pray? I explained everything I knew, but that night I couldn’t sleep thinking about the harrowing tale of this young girl. I thought I don’t need to be there or wait to see how they got on, I can pray here and now, so I cried out to God with all my heart for her.
The next day my friends contacted me to tell me Amira had come to church and received prayer, but asked me, “Mamma Jane did you pray for her last night?”
I said yes and they told me that night Amira had a dream in which she saw a white woman with short hair praying for her. She felt a deep peace fill her and when she woke the next day for the first time since the incident she no longer wanted to die! My friends kept a photo of me in their Bible and showed the picture to Amira asking, “is this the woman you saw in your dreams”? Amira exclaimed with astonishment, “how did you know who I saw in my dream?!” They said “that’s God!”
Several months later I visited my friends and had the opportunity to meet Amira and her family and pray with them, it was a truly moving experience. As well, her brother in his desperation started taking drugs to hide the pain of their poor circumstances, but that day repented of this, turned to God and was saved.
